Elearning Glossary.

AICC (Aviation Industry CBT Committee)

AICC is a standard used by learning management systems. There are 9 different AICC guidelines and recommendations, a learning management system has to comply with at least one or more to be compliant.

Author

An author is a person who uses various authoring tools to create elearning modules and content.

Authoring Tools

Authoring Tools are software applications used to create elearning modules and content. Authoring tools give trainers and instructional designers the ability to create interactive elearning content. The elearning content created using authoring tools is usually created to comply with industry standards, for example SCORM and AICC.

Blended Learning

Blended Learning is when an instructor uses multiple methods to deliver learning content. The most common would be an instructor using elearning applications combined with face to face meetings to deliver the learning content.

Competency Based Training (CBT)

A form of training defined by industry standards, this form of training focuses on the skills acquired to perform within an industry. This method of training places less emphasis on traditional learning methods but focus on the learners competence to complete the tasks required.

Composica

A sophisticated authoring tool that allows the author to have full control over the way each element appears and behaves. Composica gives an author the ability to completely customise their learning content and its behaviour.

Custom Content

Content that has been developed for specific learning objectives. Custom Content creation should follow a process that includes needs assessment, storyboard, planning development and quality assurance. Custom content is often favoured over packaged content due to its ability to attain very specific learning objectives.

Elearning

Elearning is a method that utilises available technologies to facilitate learning. This method of learning utilises networks to deliver learning content, enable interaction between users, and generally facilitate the learning process from both teacher and student perspectives. Elearning employs written, audio and visual content to deliver learning content that can be accessed with a computer anytime anywhere.

The storage of web page or other internet content, for example elearning material.

Instructional Designer

An Instructional Designer is the main figure in charge of the educational design of elearning projects. This is the person that plans the entire project from projects content up to and including the presentation of the educational material to the student.

learning management system (LMS)

A learning management system is software designed to facilitate the learning process. A learning management system or LMS has the ability to create courses, deliver learning content, track users, record data, assess students, deliver reports and track completion rates.

Mobile Elearning

Mobile elearning is essentially learning using wireless technology. This method of learning can be delivered on such devices as mobile phones and PDA’s.

SCORM

The SCORM format is a method of organising elearning data using a Shareable Content Object Reference Model. Many institutions use SCORM to create elearning content that can be used in a range of learning management systems. SCORM is a standard maintained by the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative.

Web Based Training (WBT)

Like elearning WBT is a method of training is delivered over a network. This form of training is usually undertaken at professional and corporate levels.

WYSIWYG

WYSIWYG is an acronym for What You See Is What You Get. Basically this is an interface that shows the content in the design process as it would appear to the end user.
